Sizes and weights
Handcrafted planters run 8, 10, 12, 15 and 18 cm in diameter. A 12 cm stoneware pot weighs 320 to 380 g, an 18 cm weighs 900 g to 1.1 kg. Because each piece is thrown, expect a 6 to 10 percent weight spread inside a batch, which changes carton counts if you plan by weight.
Glaze and drainage
Reactive glazes are what sell this category and what makes it hard to reorder: the same recipe gives a different break across kiln positions. Ask for a photo of three pieces from the batch, not one. Drainage holes are 8 to 12 mm, one or three per pot, and cachepots ship without a hole but with a 15 mm saucer recess.
MOQ and lead time
Minimum is 300 pieces per glaze for stock shapes, 500 for a custom silhouette. Production runs 30 to 40 days because the workshop dries slowly to avoid cracking, and rushing that step is why handmade pots arrive with hairline cracks at the base.
Selling handcrafted online
Photograph against a neutral background with a ruler in one frame. State the diameter range rather than a single number, and put the weight in the listing: planters are bought by people who care whether a shelf bracket will hold them.
Drainage, saucer and the shelf test
One 10 mm hole drains a 12 cm pot; above 15 cm use three holes of 10 mm or a single 15 mm, otherwise the base holds water and the roots sit in it. Saucers are quoted separately and add 0.18 to 0.35 per piece at 12 to 18 cm.
Before you approve a shape, fill the pot with dry soil, water it heavily and leave it 24 hours. A base that seeps at the foot ring means the glaze stopped short, and that is a claim waiting to happen in a retail box.
Logo on a handcrafted planter
Embossing the base is the only method that suits the process: a debossed stamp at 6 to 10 mm depth survives the glaze and does not fight the surface texture. Applied decals on reactive glaze look patched, and laser etching removes the glaze entirely, leaving a matte mark that collects dirt.
Tooling for a base stamp runs 180 to 260 dollars once, and adds nothing to the unit price.
