What a full set contains
A commercial matcha set is six parts: a bowl of 480 to 600 ml, a bamboo whisk with 80 or 100 tines, an 18 cm scoop, a whisk stand, an optional sieve, and a gift box. Packed in its box the set measures 24 by 18 by 12 cm and weighs about 0.9 kg.
Buyers often quote the bowl alone and discover the cost gap later. At 500 sets the parts build up like this: bowl 3.2, whisk 1.8, scoop 0.4, stand 0.5, box 1.1, which is where the 13.8 FOB price comes from.
Bowl geometry: the 12.5 cm rule
The inner diameter has to let a 100-tine whisk open fully. Below 12 cm the tines compress against the wall and the foam never forms; the working range is 12 to 13 cm. Depth runs 7 to 8 cm, and the trade-off is simple: deeper bowls splash, shallower ones make the whisk scrape the base.
Wall thickness is 4 to 5 mm with a 6 mm foot ring, which keeps the bowl stable while whisking one-handed. Capacity of 480 ml covers two servings at 60 ml each plus the foam, and that is the size most cafes reorder.
Bamboo parts and export
Tine count separates the grades: 80 tines is the standard cafe whisk, 100 is retail premium, 120 is ceremonial and roughly doubles the cost. Bamboo moisture must land between 8 and 12 percent. Above 14 percent the whisk grows mould inside a sea container, and that is the single most common claim on matcha sets.
Bamboo kitchenware does not need ISPM 15 treatment, but the wooden crate around it does. Expect to replace a whisk every 6 to 12 months in daily cafe use, which is why the better accounts order spares in the same shipment.
MOQ, sampling and lead time
Minimum order is 300 sets, or 500 for a custom bowl shape. Sampling takes 10 to 14 days because the bowl needs a glaze firing and the bamboo has to be sourced to the right tine count. Production runs 30 to 35 days.
If the set is a gift SKU, add a foam insert and a printed sleeve: 0.35 per set at 500 pieces, and it removes the need for individual wrapping on the retail floor.
Checking a sample before you commit
Whisk a full bowl and look at three things. Foam should hold for 60 seconds without breaking at the edge; if it collapses in 20, the bowl is too shallow and the tines are not opening. Run a finger around the inner wall: a ridge where the wall meets the base traps powder and is the most common mould point.
Then weigh the bamboo. A 100-tine whisk of 12 to 18 g has enough body; below 10 g the tines bend on the second use. Finally, close the gift box and shake it: any movement means the foam insert was cut for a different bowl size, and that is what arrives broken.
Three spec mistakes we see every month
Quoting only the bowl and forgetting the whisk grade, so the sample arrives with an 80-tine whisk against a 120-tine expectation. Approving a bowl at 11 cm because it photographs well, then finding a 100-tine whisk will not open inside it. And specifying a box before the bowl is final, which forces a second insert tooling at 180 to 260 dollars.
