Porcelain uses kaolin with a low iron content and fires at 1,300 to 1,400 degrees, which gives a dense, white, translucent body. Bone china adds 30 to 45 percent bone ash, fires twice, and ends up 30 to 40 percent lighter for the same capacity. Stoneware fires at 1,180 to 1,250 degrees, stays opaque, and tolerates thermal shock that would crack the other two. The practical difference is not prestige: it is weight, chip behaviour and how the glaze sits on the body.

Weight Is a Freight Line

A standard porcelain 11oz mug weighs 280 to 320 grams. The same mug in bone china weighs 180 to 220 grams. Stoneware runs 340 to 400 grams. At sea freight that difference is small per piece but compounds: a 40-foot container holds roughly 30 percent more bone china by volume before hitting the weight limit. If you ship 20,000 pieces a year, the lighter body can save more in freight than it costs in unit price, which is why premium hotel groups specify it.

Chip Resistance and Replacement Rate

Bone china has a thin rim and chips at 2 to 4 percent per year in hotel use, against 1 to 2 percent for porcelain and under 1 percent for stoneware. Replacement cost is not the mug alone: it is the reorder, the freight and the mismatch when a discontinued pattern meets a new batch. A hotel running 3,000 covers replaces 60 to 120 bone china mugs a year. The same operation in stoneware replaces 30. Price the replacement rate into the decision, not just the purchase order.

Dishwasher and Microwave Behaviour

Porcelain and stoneware tolerate commercial dishwashers indefinitely. Bone china is fine in domestic machines but discolours and loses glaze gloss after roughly 500 industrial cycles at 70 degrees with strong detergent. None of the three belongs in a microwave if the decoration is metallic, and only unglazed stoneware handles a thermal shock from oven to ice water. If the venue runs a conveyor dishwasher, stoneware is the safer specification regardless of how the sample looks.

Cost per Piece at Volume

At 1,000 pieces, a plain white porcelain mug lands at 0.65 to 0.80 dollars, stoneware at 0.55 to 0.70, and bone china at 0.95 to 1.30. At 5,000 pieces the gaps narrow by 0.08 to 0.12 because tooling and setup amortise. Decoration costs the same across the three, so a logo on bone china adds the same 0.04 to 0.18 as it does on stoneware. The premium is in the body, which is why the choice should follow the channel rather than the sample rack.

How to Choose by Channel

Hotel and restaurant: stoneware for durability, porcelain where the table setting is premium and the dishwasher is gentle. Retail gift: bone china sells on weight and thinness, and the 20 to 35 percent premium is recoverable at retail. Coffee shop: porcelain with a thick rim and a handle that fits two fingers, because the mug is used eight times a day. Promotional: stoneware, because the cost per logo impression is the lowest and breakage in transit is predictable.

Where Each One Fails in Transit

Breakage is not uniform across the three bodies. Stoneware survives a 2,300 km rail leg at under 1 percent when packed in a double-wall carton with dividers; porcelain sits at 1 to 2 percent because the rim is thinner; bone china reaches 3 to 6 percent without individual wrapping and drops to 1 to 2 percent with moulded pulp inserts, which add 0.08 to 0.14 per piece. The freight saving from the lighter body is real, but only if the packing absorbs the difference. Ask the supplier for the carton drop test result at 80 cm; a quote that cannot produce one is pricing the product, not the delivery.

One more distinction worth writing into the brief: bone china is translucent and rings when tapped, porcelain is white and dense, and stoneware is opaque and heavier. If the brand story depends on thinness, bone china is the answer and the breakage budget has to reflect it, typically 8 to 12 percent in transit against 3 to 5 for stoneware.

Choose the Body for the Channel, Not the Prestige

The material question is answered by where the mug lives, not by which sample feels best in the hand. Weight drives freight, chip rate drives replacement, and both are measurable before the order. Price all three at your volume, add the annual replacement rate, and the cheapest option is rarely the one that looked best at the trade show. If you want the three quoted against your own specification, send the capacity and the decoration and we will mark up where each lands.

Range: ceramic mug · gift mug.

More in this series: Manufacturing &
