Buyers ask us for “the standard 11oz”, then send a mould drawing with a different height, and then we spend a week reconciling what they actually wanted. The confusion is always the same: capacity in ounces is not a dimension, and two mugs with the same ounces can differ by 15 mm in height.

This is the dimension sheet we send back. All figures are fired dimensions, measured with a calliper after the glaze firing, not the mould drawing.

The dimension chart

Tolerance on fired height and diameter is ±2% for us, which is ±1.9 mm on a 95 mm mug. Anything wider than ±3% will show up as stacking problems in your warehouse, not in ours.

Average mug dimensions, in one line

If you want the single most useful answer: the average ceramic mug sold worldwide is 11 oz (325 ml), 95 mm tall, 81 mm across the top, 66 mm at the base, and weighs about 340 g empty. That is the shape the promotional and retail market standardised on decades ago, and it is still the default for a reason — it fits a standard 250 ml coffee serving with headroom, sits in every dishwasher, and packs efficiently.

The European café standard runs slightly smaller at 8.5 oz (250 ml) because espresso-based drinks are served in smaller volumes there. Hospitality buyers in North America usually order 12 oz for table service and 8 oz for cups and saucers.

oz to ml: the conversion that causes claims

One US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml. That means 8 oz is 236.6 ml, 11 oz is 325.3 ml, 12 oz is 354.9 ml and 15 oz is 443.6 ml. Two traps sit inside that number.

First, nominal versus usable capacity. You never fill a mug to the rim. An 11 oz mug holds roughly 9.5 oz of drink in normal use, and a 15 oz holds about 13 oz. Buyers who specify “must hold 12 oz of coffee” should be ordering a 15 oz mug, and buyers who size by nominal capacity alone are the ones who file “too small” claims.

Second, UK fluid ounces are different: 1 UK fl oz is 28.41 ml. When a European buyer says “10 oz”, confirm which ounce before tooling anything, because the difference compounds across a container.

Diameter is what decides your print area

Print coverage follows the circumference, not the capacity. A standard 11 oz mug gives a printable band of roughly 200 mm wide by 80 mm tall once you leave a 15 mm safety margin either side of the handle. The same mug in a 15 oz body gives about 220 mm by 90 mm. If your artwork needs a full-wrap design, the 15 oz body gives you 10% more usable area — and also 10% more glaze, clay and freight per unit.

One constraint catches people out: the handle projection. A 15 oz mug with an oversized handle measures 130 mm across including the handle, and that is the dimension that decides whether your retail packaging needs a wider box, not the 90 mm body diameter.

Why the carton matters more than the millimetres

Take two sizes, both 12 pieces to a master carton. An 11 oz mug ships in a carton of roughly 340 × 270 × 250 mm, or 0.023 CBM. A 15 oz mug needs about 380 × 300 × 300 mm, or 0.034 CBM. A 20GP container holds around 28 CBM of usable volume, so the smaller carton carries roughly 1,200 cartons and the larger about 820 — a third fewer mugs for the same freight.

That is the real cost of “let’s just go one size up”. Breakage behaves the same way: taller mug stacks need taller dividers, and a carton that leaves 8 mm of clearance instead of 15 mm will run a 3–5% breakage rate where a properly fitted one runs under 1%.

How we measure before quoting

Fired dimensions come off a calliper on ten pieces from the first firing, and we quote from those numbers rather than the drawing. Weight tolerance sits at ±5%: a 340 g mug legitimately ships between 323 g and 357 g, and a supplier quoting a 340 g mug at 280 g has changed the body, not the process. Water absorption must be under 0.5% for porcelain and between 1% and 3% for stoneware, and that number is what decides whether the mug survives a commercial dishwasher line.

Mistakes we see on size specs

Choosing 15 oz for retail because “bigger feels premium”. In practice 11 oz outsells it in every programme we have shipped, and the 15 oz drags 30% more freight.

Measuring with the handle included. The body diameter and the across-handle dimension differ by 40 mm on a large mug; a packaging spec built on the wrong one produces boxes that do not close.

Treating nominal capacity as usable capacity. Covered above, and it is the most common source of “undersized” claims.

Mixing sizes inside one SKU family. If a range uses different body heights, the retail carton needs repacking between sizes, and the gift box that fits the 11 oz will not fit the 15 oz.

What we would specify

For a first retail or promotional range, order the 11 oz body and stop there. Add an 8 oz only if you sell cups and saucers or serve espresso drinks, and add a 15 oz only if your market is tea, soup or travel-style volume. Keep one body height across the range so the packaging, carton and pallet stay standard, and put fired dimensions with ±2% in the PO rather than a capacity figure in ounces. If you need a dimension check against an existing box or shelf, send the measurements and we will tell you which body fits before you commit to tooling.

Reference range: wholesale ceramic mugs · send us your dimensions.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "What are the average dimensions of a ceramic mug?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "A standard 11 oz mug measures about 95 mm tall with an 81 mm top diameter, a 66 mm base diameter and roughly 340 g empty.
