Price bands by volume
At 500 pieces a 12 cm glazed planter quotes 1.10 to 1.45; at 2,000 it drops to 0.85 to 1.10; at 10,000 the floor is 0.72 to 0.95. The band moves most between 500 and 2,000 because that is where the kiln load changes from shared to dedicated.
Carton and cubage
Twelve 12 cm pots fill a master of 0.032 cubic metres at 5.2 kg; the 18 cm size packs six to a master at 0.055 cubic metres and 6.8 kg. Cubage, not weight, decides your freight on planters, so a supplier who quotes per piece without the carton line is quoting half a number.
MOQ and colour
Minimum is 500 per glaze, and mixing three colours in one order is fine as long as each colour clears 500. Below that the kiln changeover is charged back, usually 60 to 90 dollars per extra colour.
Seasonal planning
Garden centres buy February to April and again in September. Production runs 25 to 30 days plus 30 to 38 days at sea, so a spring range has to be confirmed by late November. Orders placed in January arrive after the season has started, which is the most common timing miss in this category.
How to compare two planter quotes
Ask both suppliers for the same five lines: fired diameter with tolerance, drainage spec, glaze code with a fired chip, master carton cubage, and gross weight. A quote with a unit price and nothing else cannot be compared, because the cubage difference between two 12 cm pots can be 18 percent, which is 18 percent of your freight.
Sample protocol for planters
Order three pieces, not one. Plant one with a real plant and water it for two weeks, drop one from 80 cm onto concrete, and keep the third as the reference. The drop test matters more than the visual check: a pot that chips at the rim on an 80 cm fall will not survive a courier network.
Record the fired diameter of all three with a caliper. If the spread exceeds your tolerance, ask for a second batch before placing the order rather than after.
